The billsponsors127download.csv file is one of a number of data files available for download on the Open Maine Politics website. It is a comma-delimited file that can be opened by any modern spreadsheet or database program. Each row represents an act of sponsorship or cosponsorship, and attributes of each act of primary bill sponsorship or cosponsorship are organized into five columns:
Column 1: sponsorshipkey — this is a unique id for each act of bill [co]sponsorship. The number does not signify anything substantive, but can be used to refer separately to each act of sponsorship.
Column 2: ld — standing for legislative document. Each regular bill that is formalized and sent to a committee for consideration is given a unique LD number by staff of the Maine State Legislature. Newspaper articles and archives typically refer to this number when reporting on a bill.
Column 3: legislatorlastname — the last name of the legislator acting as primary sponsor or cosponsor of the bill referred to in that row.
Column 4: legid — a unique identifying number referring to the legislator acting as primary sponsor or cosponsor of the bill referred to in that row. The legid number is used consistently for the 127th legislature on the Open Maine Politics website, making it useful for linking different kinds of acts, attributes and relationships of a legislator (see downloads for other tables of related data regarding legislators.
Column 5: primarysponsor — “yes” indicates that the legislator referred to in that row is the primary sponsor. “no” indicates that the legislator is a cosponsor.
