Codebook: campaigncommitteesdownload.csv

The campaigncommitteesdownload.csv file is one of a number of data files available for download on the Open Maine Politics website. It is a comma-delimited file that can be opened by any modern spreadsheet or database program. Each row of the dataset represents one corporate entity — whether registered with the Maine Ethics Commission as a committee or not — that contributed to another committee or to a member of the 127th Maine State Legislature in the 2013-2014 election season.  Commercial and non-profit contributions from sources that share a name and address are grouped together for clarity in presentation.  Variables for each row are organized into eight columns:

Column 1: OrgID: a unique id used by the Maine Ethics Commission to refer to a political committee that is officially registered with the commission.  For corporate entities that make contributions but that are not officially registered with the commission (a large majority of cases), this field is blank.

Column 2: OtherID: for corporate entities that are not officially registered with the Maine Ethics Commission, a unique ID generated by Open Maine Politics.  Otherwise, blank.

Column 3: leadershippac: contains a 1 if the committee has a current member of the 127th Maine State Legislature as one of its registered officer.  Otherwise, blank.

Column 4: CommitteeName— the name of the committee or corporate entity making political corporations in Maine’s 2013-2014 election season.

Column 5: Address 1 — first part of the address of the entity.

Column 6: Address 2 — second part of the address of the entity (if any).

Column 7: City — city in which the entity is located.

Column 8: State — state in which the entity is located.
