Democracy works best if we all do a bit to inform ourselves and others, rather than leaving the task up to a select few. It has been a long practice for organized and well-funded political groups in Maine to assemble and distribute legislative ratings that reflect their particular political interests. On this page, you can find links to legislative ratings made by everyday citizens using the Open Maine Politics website. In these rankings, legislators are judged according to their cosponsorships — the choice to formally support certain bills and not others early in the process by which a bill becomes a law.
You are welcomed to add your own legislative rating to the list. Decide on a subject that you care about. Use the Open Maine Politics website — or another handy resource — to learn more about the bills before the Maine State Legislature. Read through those bills and become familiar with what those bills would do if passed. When you’re ready, visit this page to enter your bill choices, describe your issue and even add your name as author if you’d like. We update this lists once every day or two after reviewing submissions and contacting authors if necessary; if you’d like to see your rating page published more quickly, please get in touch and let us know.
